The ability to control your personal information is an essential element of privacy.

To do this, you need to understand what information you're sharing, know how to use the tools that help you control how your information is collected and used, and be well-informed about the different ways to protect your information online. These are all key parts of being a digital citizen. The starting point for all digital citizens is the willingness to take steps to educate ourselves and to take advantage of the resources available to us.

For our Facebook community, these resources include Privacy Basics, which offers interactive guides to help answer the most commonly-asked questions; Privacy Checkup, which lets you see and control who sees your profile and what you post; Privacy Shortcuts, which is a menu where you can review & update your privacy settings, secure your account (for example, by strengthening your password and using two-factor authentication), review what you’ve shared and delete it if you want to, and even manage the information we use to show you ads; and materials that explain how we use the information entrusted to us.

Being good digital citizens means safeguarding our own online privacy. I hope that through this program we can help our community by making these resources more widely accessible and reminding people of the steps they can take, as responsible digital citizens, to protect themselves online. Which reminds me – it’s time to take my regular Privacy Checkup!

The starting point for all digital citizens is the willingness to take steps to educate ourselves and to take advantage of the resources available to us.
